概要

In 2010, the Russian Federation ranked third globally in terms of per capita alcohol intake (The World Health Organization [WHO], 2016). Alcohol intake substantially decreased from 15.8 liters per year (34 g/day) to 11.7 liters per year (26 g/day) of pure alcohol per capita between 2010 and 2016 (WHO, 2016). However, the proportion of deaths attributable to alcohol intake is still very high—21.6% (WHO, 2016). Nevertheless, the amount of the daily intake of pure alcohol among older Russians remains unknown, and there are almost no studies on the relationships between health, quality of sleep, and quality of life (QOL) in this population.

In contrast, per capita alcohol intake in Japan reached 8.0 liters per year (18 g/day) of pure alcohol in 2016 (WHO, 2016). There are many studies on the relationships between health, quality of sleep, and QOL among older Japanese people. Alcohol intake increases the risk of high blood pressure, cerebrovascular disease, and cardiovascular disease in this population (Matsuda et al., 2016). Moreover, it can lead to sleep disorders (Ohayon, 2002), reduce sleep-onset latency among older adults, fragment sleep in the second part of the night, increase daytime sleepiness (Gerontological Society of America [GSA], 2015), increase instances of disturbance in the total sleep time, decrease sleep quality, and lead to nocturnal awakening and wakefulness after sleep onset (Kaneita et al., 2007). Moreover, alcohol intake can decrease the levels of the physical and mental components of QOL (Matsushita and Matsushima, 2004; Sun et al., 2015).
