CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND

1

1.1 General considerations
Human activity is the main source of many kinds of pollution around the world. Air pollution has
been a serious problem around the world especially in developing countries like Vietnam. Even in
remote areas like Antarctica, the snow got polluted. More concern is focused on the organic pollutants
because of their toxicity and persistence. One of them are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs),
which are formed from the incomplete combustion of organic materials including biomass, gasoline,
diesel, and coal. ...

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

In this small space, I would like convey my gratefulness to many people that assist me through

my PhD. course at Osaka Prefecture University.

Firstly, I would like to show my sincere gratitude to my supervisor, Prof. Norimichi Takenaka,

who inspires and supports me on my academic course as well as my life. Thank you for caring me as

a student, a daughter and never giving up on me.

A special thank for Prof. To Thi Hien, my former supervisor, who introduced me to Osaka

Prefecture University and Prof. Takenaka. She constantly gives me opportunities and encouragement

on my research career.

An appreciation for Prof. Hideaka Hisamoto and Prof. Shigeyuki Yagi for reviewing my thesis.

This thesis is greatly improved thanks to their comments and advices.

I would like to express my appreciation to Prof. Yasuaki Maeda and Dr. Kiyoshi Imamura for

various discussion on research ideas and practical skills. Your words impact me tremendously and

you challenge me to improve my thinking and action.

I am especially thankful for Dr. Yasuyuki Itano at Osaka City Research Center of Environmental

Science for helping with my research and sharing his knowledge about equipment. I would like to

show my respect to researchers in the research center for welcoming me as I did my research there.

I would like to give my gratefulness to Assistant Prof. Yusuke Fujii for helping on my writing

and my study. His advice and knowledge influence me greatly.

I also want to thank Prof. Takayuki Kameda at Kyoto University for various help on my research.

I want to send my gratitude to Mr. Masaaki Fujita, Mr. Toshihiko Sakai and Mrs. Yukiko Tamura,

together with my friends in Graduate course for System-inspired Leaders in Material Science (SiMS)

program.

My laboratory mates, my seniors and my friends, Mr. Kazushi Noro, Mr. Kodai Kitada, Mr.

Kengo Fukae, Ms. Kanako Ishida, Mr. Katsuya Toriyama, Dr. Duong Huu Huy, Dr. Trinh Thai Ha,

Dr. Do Thi Kim Hue are very precious to me as I grow as a person. I want to thank all B4 and master

students in my laboratory and Vietnamese students in OPU for being my friends. Thank you for

teaching Japanese and enriching my social life.
