概要
Objective : This study aimed to clarify the quality of care in the emergency department by the evaluation of the structure and process of palliative care by families of patients who died in the emergency department.
Method : Cross-sectional anonymous questionnaire surveys were conducted in community-dwelling indi- viduals aged 40-79 years who were randomly sampled from census tracts. A shortened version of the Care Evaluation Scale was used.
Results : Data from 121 bereaved family members of patients who died in the emergency department were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests. “The total cost was reasonable” was rated lower by primary caregivers compared with non-caregivers（p = 0.032）. Regarding patients whose deaths were unex- pected, family members rated “the doctors sufficiently explained the expected outcome to the family” lower compared with families who had an idea of the worst outcome for the patients（p = 0.035）. Moreover, “admis- sion（use）was possible when necessary without waiting” was rated low by families with daily attendance（p = 0.03）.
Conclusion : Bereaved family members who did not predict the death of the patient and those who had a deep relationship with the deceased patient had a low evaluation of the quality of end-of-life care of the emer- gency department.
