Science: a message from the Dean

I am very pleased to announce that the Nagoya Journal of Medical Science is celebrating its
100th anniversary. The journal’s first issue was launched in 1923 as the Aich Journal of Experimental Medicine. Since its establishment, the Nagoya Journal of Medical Science has published
numerous original papers and review articles; it has played a pivotal role in the advancement
of novel medicine and medical science.
The Nagoya University was established approximately 150 years ago, ie, 50 years before the
journal was launched. The Nagoya Prefecture established a temporary medical school and public
hospital in 1871, which is considered to be the founding year of the Nagoya University (Table
1). The school’s name has changed several times, but it was renamed Nagoya University in 1949
under the new education system. Today, as one of the most prestigious universities in Japan,
Nagoya University has produced six Nobel laureates. The School of Medicine and Graduate
School of Medicine form the core of Nagoya University.

The major turning point for the Nagoya Journal of Medical Science was when it became
open-access in 2010. Then, it debuted on MEDLINE in 2013, thanks to the current Editor-inChief, Professor Shinya Toyokuni. The journal has rapidly grown since and has become one of
the leading journals in terms of publishing research from Japanese universities.
Finally, I would like to thank all the authors who have submitted articles to the Nagoya
Journal of Medical Science and all the readers. I hope that the journal will continue to publish
valuable articles and contribute to the advancement of medicine and medical science.
