The current study aimed to enhance teaching and learning activities to improve nursing
competencies among nursing students in Cambodia with two objectives. The first objective was to
examine the association between the level of nursing students’ competencies and its related factors.
The second was to explore the practices and perceptions of teaching and learning among students,
faculty, and preceptors. A convergent mixed-methods design was applied to comprehensively
explore the practices and perceptions among students, faculty, and preceptors. Eight educational
institutions and seven national and provincial hospitals were included in the study. Three main
findings were identified from the mixed-methods integration.

Quantitative and qualitative results complemented each other that students had higher self-

assessed competencies among those experienced case-based learning in both classroom and clinical
practicum. Case-based learning in Cambodia was introduced by faculty and preceptors who learned
the skill during their training. Considering the seniority system in Cambodia, it worked in a
culturally appropriate manner because it was conducted in small groups both in classroom and
clinical practicum settings.

Quantitative and qualitative results confirmed that students had higher self-assessed

competencies among those who were more satisfied with the classroom and clinical teaching.
Furthermore, the qualitative study identified that students required more support both from faculty
and preceptors in clinical teaching.

Quantitative and qualitative results expanded that students had higher self-assessed

competencies among those more satisfied with the design and delivery of the educational program.
The inconsistencies between theory and practice were identified in clinical nursing techniques and
nursing records at educational institutions and hospitals.
This study highlighted the essential factors of nursing students’ competency development. The
main findings were identified comprehensively by exploring various perspectives of those involved
in educational and clinical nursing settings, including students, faculty, and perceptors. Moreover,
the study was able to further deepen the understanding of the findings by incorporating a convergent
mixed-methods design, Therefore, the current study contributes to providing comprehensive
recommendations towards competency-based education in resource-limited settings. よって、本論
