概要

Natural products are organic compounds from living organisms in nature and are usually produced by the pathways of primary or secondary metabolism that take place in animals, plants, microbials, and so on. These metabolites are intermediate and final products of the process of metabolism and usually are small molecules. Primary metabolites are those that are directly involved in the growth, evolution, and reproduction of living organisms. Examples include small molecule fatty acids such as acetic acid, amino acids such as glycine, and carbohydrates such as glucose. Secondary metabolites are not directly involved in these processes but have important functions, some of them showing biological activity to protect the living organisms from predators. The structures of secondary metabolites are usually highly diverse, such as alkaloids, polyketides, and terpenoids.

For example, salicylic acid was extracted from willow and used as an antipyretic and analgesic drug (Figure 1-1). Alizarin is a dye isolated from the roots of Rubia tinctorum and is the first dye to produce the same organic compound as a natural substance by synthesis. Menthols are found in peppermint and mint and have eight isomers. Among these, (–)-menthol is the most stable and is used as a medicinal product because it has a cooling and a local vasodilatory effect. The alkaloid aconitine is a toxic component contained in aconitum that can interact with the voltage-dependent sodium-ion channels.

As shown above, natural products exhibit a variety of bioactivities and are closely related to our lives. Such natural products have been used by human beings since ancient times as foods, flavors, medicines, poisons, dyes, and pesticides. Even now, natural products still contribute a lot to human society.
