Abstract

Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of change in sleep duration over 1

year on subjective health complaints (SHCs) in children.

Methods: We enrolled 193 children aged 10–11 years from two public schools in Kobe, and

assessed SHCs, sleep duration by self-reported questionnaires.

Results: Decrease in sleep duration led to a significant increase in the number of symptomatic SHCs

(partial regression coefficient: –0.48, 95% confidence interval [95%CI]: -0.82∼-0.14) and to a significant

increase in the probability of specific SHCs: tiredness (Odds ratio: 2.00, 95%CI: 1.14~3.67) and dizziness

(4.49, 1.36~18.5).

Conclusion: This study suggested that maintaining a good sleep habit is important for the prevention of

SHCs.
