Summary
We investigated stand structure from the montane to subalpine zone in Nishikoma Station, Shinshu
University Forests, and discuss the background of satoyama-landscape use in the past. On the left bank of
the Oguro-river in the Nishikoma Station, no tree species exceeded 90 years old with the exception of
Tsuga diversifolia. In addition, many small stumps were found on the left bank of the Oguro-river. These
results suggest that firewood and grasses for manure and livestock feed had been harvested in part of the
Nishikoma Station in the past. In stands where many stumps were found, it is likely that regeneration
occurred via seedlings. It was suggested that in these stands, trees were sparse in the past due to the
intense harvesting of firewood and grasses. In contrast, stands with few stumps were mainly regenerated
by coppice, and likely used as firewood forests in the past. It was concluded that the stand structure of
Nishikoma Station is strongly influenced by anthropogenic disturbances resulting from satoyama-landscape
use in the past. The progress of forest development following the abandonment of satoyama-landscape use,
seems to reflect the strength of land use in the past. Forest development seems to be delayed in stands
where intense land use was conducted.
