ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to understand the actual situations in which school nurses experienced
difficulties with respect to checkups at school for children with developmental disorders in regular
class, and their coping strategies. An anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey of 166 school
nurses working in elementary schools in A Prefecture was conducted from July to August 2017. The
results showed that checkups in which school nurses experienced more difficulty were as follows:
explanatory tools regarding ear, nose, and throat examinations; electrocardiogram tests; dental
examinations; visual acuity tests; and hearing tests. School nurses commonly indicated that they tried
to cope more with the difficulties associated with these five tests. There were a lot of codes about
“aversion to use inserting instruments,”and“afraid of inserting instruments”in the test using many
instruments; explanatory tools regarding ear, nose, and throat examinations, electrocardiogram tests,
and dental examinations. The main codes were extracted as reasons why they experienced difficulties
in visual acuity tests and hearing tests:“cannot make an accurate judgment,”and students“cannot
understand.”Major coping strategies school nurses provided for children with developmental
disorders were:“explain about checkups,”
“give guidance about checkups,”
“try training,”
“display
the checkup procedure,”
“define the checkup procedure,”
“switch turns with another student,”
“show
models.”These results showed that the difficulties felt by school nurses with regard to checkups
at school are related to the nature of the children’
s developmental disorders. School nurses need to
help children psychologically prepare for the checkup based on the nature of their developmental
disorder(e.g., hyperactivity, hypersensibility, and maladjustment)and to devise tests so children can
understand what is happening.
